Crack down on touts urgently, says Goa minister amid viral videos row

Margao, Apr 15: Rohan Khaunte on Tuesday called for immediate action against touts operating at tourist hotspots, stating that their activities are tarnishing Goa’s global image.

His remarks come in the wake of two viral videos that have sparked controversy across the state. One video, reportedly filmed in Calangute, shows a foreign national alleging open drug sales and accusing authorities of turning a blind eye. Another clip from Baga purportedly shows a foreigner soliciting clients on a public road.

The developments have triggered a political storm, with concerns mounting over law enforcement and tourist safety in the region.

Khaunte said he would take up the issue with Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and ensure it is pursued to its “logical conclusion.” He pointed out that despite earlier efforts to curb tout activity, the issue has resurfaced.

“The PI of Calangute police station has changed, and the touts have come back,” he said, adding that instances of “international tourists” being approached on the streets were an embarrassment for the state.

Reiterating his stance, Khaunte said efforts to eliminate touts began soon after he assumed office as tourism minister, and stressed the need for sustained enforcement.

He also urged the police to “put their act together” and intensify surveillance at key tourist locations to prevent such incidents and restore confidence among visitors.
