Kanpur, Apr 12: A shocking case of alleged dowry-related cruelty has surfaced in Kanpur after a viral video showed a woman being brutally assaulted by her father-in-law, triggering outrage on social media.

The victim, a native of Prayagraj, was married in 2020 to Himanshu Dubey, an IT manager. She alleged that since her marriage, her in-laws had been demanding dowry, including two bighas of land and Rs 20 lakh in cash.

According to the complaint, she was repeatedly subjected to physical abuse, verbal harassment and mental torture for refusing to meet these demands. She accused her father-in-law Sushil Dubey, along with other family members, of continuous harassment.

The incident occurred on Friday afternoon when the woman returned to her in-laws’ residence with her brother and sister-in-law. She alleged that soon after entering the house, her father-in-law attacked her without provocation, pinned her to the ground and assaulted her with kicks and punches.

She further claimed that her clothes were torn during the assault and that she was dragged by her hair out of the house onto the street. The woman was seen in the viral video screaming for help, while bystanders reportedly did not intervene out of fear.

The victim also alleged that her five-year-old daughter witnessed the incident and that she had earlier been confined inside the house. She sustained multiple injuries but was not provided medical treatment, she claimed.

Following the incident, the woman approached the police. While initial action was reportedly delayed, Abhishek Kumar Pandey later took cognisance, leading to the registration of an FIR and the arrest of one accused.

Police confirmed that the viral video appears to show the father-in-law assaulting the woman. Further investigation is underway.
