New Delhi, Apr 10: India has expressed deep concern over rising civilian casualties in Lebanon as Israeli strikes continue despite a recently announced ceasefire in the region.
Speaking at an inter-ministerial briefing, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal described the situation as “very disturbing,” especially given India’s longstanding role in peace efforts in West Asia. He reiterated that protection of civilians remains a top priority and stressed the importance of adhering to international law and respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations.
India, which contributes troops to the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), said it is closely monitoring developments on the ground. The government also confirmed that nearly 1,000 Indian nationals are currently in Lebanon, with the Indian Embassy maintaining regular contact to ensure their safety.

The situation comes amid growing strain on the ceasefire brokered between the United States and Iran. While Tehran has linked the truce to a halt in Israeli military operations in Lebanon, both the US and Israel have maintained that actions against Hezbollah are outside its scope.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed any suggestion of a ceasefire in Lebanon, stating that operations against Hezbollah would continue until security objectives are met. He also indicated plans to initiate direct negotiations with Lebanon aimed at disarming Hezbollah and pursuing a broader peace agreement.
With reports of continued strikes and mounting casualties, the situation has raised fears of further escalation in the region, even as diplomatic efforts continue to address differences over the ceasefire terms.
