New Delhi, Apr 10: New rules for vehicle users have come into effect from Friday, bringing a significant change for highway travellers across the country. Commuters are advised to take note of these changes before heading onto highways, as cash payments at toll plazas have now been completely discontinued nationwide.
From now on, motorists will no longer be allowed to pay toll fees using cash at toll gates. The primary objective behind this decision is to reduce long queues at toll plazas and ensure smoother and faster movement of traffic. With the removal of cash transactions, authorities expect a considerable reduction in waiting time at toll points.

Going forward, how should payments be made? Vehicle users without FASTag will have to rely solely on digital payment methods or UPI modes to pay toll charges. This means payments can be made using mobile applications such as Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BharatPe, or through bank apps by scanning QR codes or using UPI IDs.
However, there is an important condition. Vehicles without FASTag will be charged 1.25 times the regular toll fee. For instance, if the toll amount is Rs 100, users without FASTag will have to pay Rs 125. This measure is aimed at encouraging wider adoption of FASTag among motorists.
Cash payments at toll plazas often led to long queues, resulting in delays and increased fuel consumption. By promoting digital payments and FASTag usage, traffic flow at toll plazas is expected to improve significantly. The move also aims to curb black money transactions and irregularities.
Motorists without FASTag are advised to obtain one immediately through banks or online platforms, as it is beneficial in the long run. Those already using FASTag should ensure they maintain sufficient balance. Users opting for UPI payments should check that their mobile internet connection is active and functioning properly. Drivers are also urged to approach toll gates cautiously and avoid causing inconvenience to others.
This change marks a major step towards promoting digital payments in the country. By making FASTag mandatory, the government aims to modernize and streamline highway transportation. Travellers must adapt to the new system, as using FASTag is now the most efficient option, helping save time, fuel, and money.
Overall, the elimination of cash payments at toll plazas represents a significant transformation in India’s road transport system and a step forward towards a Digital India.
