Indore civic body row erupts over ‘Vande Mataram’ refusal; political storm intensifies

Daijiworld Media Network - Bhopal

Bhopal, Apr 9: A routine budget session of the Indore Municipal Corporation turned into a major political flashpoint after two Congress councillors refused to sing Vande Mataram, triggering chaos in the House and sparking a wider ideological and political debate across Madhya Pradesh.

The controversy began when councillors Fauzia Sheikh Aleem and Rubina Iqbal declined to participate in the singing of the national song during proceedings. As tensions escalated, Fauzia questioned the authority of the Chair and demanded clarity on the legal provision mandating the singing of Vande Mataram in the civic body.

Her remarks drew sharp reactions from BJP councillors, who termed the refusal an insult to national sentiment. The House soon witnessed sloganeering and heated exchanges, forcing Chairman Munnalal Yadav to direct Fauzia to leave the proceedings in an attempt to restore order.

The controversy deepened outside the House after Rubina Iqbal justified her stand on religious grounds, stating that her faith does not permit the singing of Vande Mataram. She maintained that while she respects the nation, her beliefs allow her to sing other patriotic songs but not one that she interprets as involving worship beyond Allah.

Her remarks triggered strong reactions from political circles. BJP leaders condemned the stance and indicated that legal action may be initiated, with Mayor Pushyamitra Bhargav and the chairman reportedly consulting on filing an FIR.

BJP city president Sumit Mishra invoked the legacy of India’s freedom struggle, noting that leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Subhas Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev had embraced the song as a symbol of patriotism.

The issue has also exposed divisions within the Congress. Party spokesperson KK Mishra criticised the councillors’ remarks, calling for strict action and terming the statements an insult to the nation and its freedom movement.

With sharp reactions from both ruling and opposition parties, the incident has snowballed into a major political controversy, with potential disciplinary action and legal proceedings likely in the coming days.
