New Delhi, Apr 9: In a nail-biting finish at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi Capitals fell short by just one run against Gujarat Titans in IPL 2026, but it was skipper Axar Patel’s heartfelt gesture that stole the spotlight.
Chasing a daunting 210, David Miller almost scripted a remarkable victory with an unbeaten 41 off 20 balls, bringing Delhi to the brink of a famous win. With just two runs needed off the final two deliveries, the match hung in the balance.

However, a crucial decision turned the game. Miller declined a single off the penultimate ball from Prasidh Krishna, opting to finish the game himself. The bowler responded with a slower bouncer on the last ball, leaving Miller scrambling. A desperate bye attempt with Kuldeep Yadav ended in heartbreak as Jos Buttler produced a direct hit to seal a dramatic win for Gujarat. Delhi finished at 209/8.
Visibly devastated after the loss, Miller was consoled by Axar Patel, who walked up to him, offered a handshake, and put an arm around his shoulder in a moment of rare sportsmanship that drew widespread praise.
Earlier, Gujarat Titans posted 210/4 riding on impressive knocks from Shubman Gill, Jos Buttler and Washington Sundar. In reply, KL Rahul led the chase with a fluent 92, supported by Pathum Nissanka’s 41.
The match seemed out of reach before Miller’s late blitz, including a massive 106-metre six and a 23-run over off Mohammed Siraj, brought Delhi back into contention.
Despite the dramatic finish and the missed opportunity, it was Axar’s gesture of empathy and leadership that emerged as the defining moment of the night.
