Iran’s supreme leader Mojtaba Khamenei ‘unconscious’, under treatment in Qom: Report

Daijiworld Media Network - Tehran

Tehran, Apr 7: Mojtaba Khamenei, the newly-appointed Supreme Leader of Iran, is reportedly unconscious and undergoing treatment at a hospital in Qom, according to a report by The Times.

Citing a diplomatic memo based on inputs from US-Israeli intelligence shared with Gulf allies, the report stated that Khamenei sustained serious injuries in the same airstrike that killed his father, Ali Khamenei, on February 28.

According to the memo, Khamenei is in a severe condition and is “unable to be involved in any decision-making by the regime” as he undergoes treatment in Qom, located about 140 km south of Tehran and considered a sacred city in Shia Islam.

The report also marks the first time that the location of the Iranian Supreme Leader has been disclosed publicly, though intelligence agencies of the United States and Israel were said to have known about it earlier.

However, Iranian officials have maintained that Khamenei remains in charge of the country despite confirming that he was injured in the February 28 strikes. Statements attributed to him have been broadcast on state television, and a video showing him reviewing a map of Israel’s nuclear facility in Dimona was released recently.

In a statement issued earlier, Khamenei had also condemned the killing of the IRGC intelligence chief and asserted that such actions would not weaken the regime, while criticising remarks made by US President Donald Trump.
