MEA dismisses false claims on Islamabad peace process participation

Daijiworld Media Network - New Delhi

New Delhi, Apr 1: India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) firmly rejected reports suggesting that the country had applied for observer status in the so-called “Islamabad Peace Process,” calling the claims entirely fabricated.

Through its official fact-checking handle, Ministry of External Affairs warned the public against falling for such misinformation and stressed the importance of relying only on verified sources. The ministry clarified that no such proposal or request has been made by India, labeling the circulating reports as baseless and misleading.

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar also dismissed the claims, urging citizens to stay alert to the increasing spread of false information, especially on sensitive diplomatic issues.

The misleading narrative appears to have originated from unverified social media posts alleging that New Delhi was considering joining a peace initiative associated with Islamabad. Officials noted that such rumours could lead to confusion and misinterpretation, particularly given India’s well-established stance on engagement with Pakistan.

India has consistently maintained that any dialogue with Pakistan—whether bilateral or within a broader framework—depends on credible action against cross-border terrorism. The government has repeatedly underlined that meaningful talks cannot coexist with ongoing terror activities.

The MEA’s fact-checking unit continues to actively counter misinformation, including false reports, manipulated content, and propaganda that distort India’s foreign policy. In recent times, it has addressed several inaccurate claims related to India’s international engagements across different regions.

Authorities emphasised that the spread of such false narratives not only misleads the public but can also create unnecessary complications in diplomatic circles. Both citizens and media organisations have been advised to depend on official government communications for accurate updates on foreign affairs.

This episode once again highlights the growing challenge of misinformation in the digital age. In response, the government has been strengthening its verification systems to ensure transparency and safeguard national interests.

Reiterating its position, the MEA stated that while India remains committed to peace and stability in the region, any constructive engagement must be grounded in genuine intent, decisive action against terrorism, and respect for India’s sovereignty and security.

As of now, there has been no official confirmation or communication from the Government of India supporting the claims regarding participation in any “Islamabad Peace Process.”
