New Delhi, Mar 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday lauded Jammu and Kashmir’s growing stature in sports, congratulating its cricket team for clinching their maiden Ranji Trophy title.

Speaking during the 132nd episode of his radio programme Mann Ki Baat, Modi described the victory as a historic milestone, achieved after nearly seven decades. The Jammu and Kashmir cricket team, led by Paras Dogra, defeated Karnataka cricket team in the final held in Hubballi.

“The most gratifying aspect is that, after a long wait of nearly seven decades, this team secured its maiden Ranji title,” the Prime Minister said.

He also praised young pacer Auqib Nabi for his standout performance, noting that his tally of 60 wickets during the season has drawn nationwide attention.

Highlighting the broader impact, Modi said the victory has sparked celebrations across the Union Territory, bringing pride to players, coaching staff, and residents alike.

Emphasising the region’s sporting culture, the Prime Minister said Jammu and Kashmir is steadily emerging as a hub for major sporting events. He cited the successful hosting of the Khelo India Winter Games 2026, with events held in Gulmarg and Leh, attracting over 900 athletes from 25 states and Union Territories.

“Gulmarg has already established a distinct identity as the venue for the Khelo India Winter Games. Sports like football are also immensely popular among the youth here,” he added.

The Prime Minister’s remarks underline the growing recognition of Jammu and Kashmir as an emerging destination for sports development and national-level competitions.
