San Francisco, Mar 28: Veteran Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is set to create history by becoming the first Indian-capped player to feature in Major League Cricket (MLC), after signing with the San Francisco Unicorns for the 2026 season.
A key member of India’s victorious campaigns in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, Ashwin has an illustrious international career, claiming 765 wickets across 287 matches in all formats. He also ranks among the top wicket-takers in Test cricket history.

Speaking about his new stint, Ashwin said he was excited to be part of a growing league that has attracted global talent while providing a platform for domestic players in the United States. He added that taking on the role as the first Indian international in the league carries responsibility, and his focus would be on contributing to the team’s success and entertaining fans.
Ashwin has also enjoyed a successful run in the Indian Premier League, representing teams such as Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, and Rising Pune Supergiants. He was also set to feature in the Big Bash League for Sydney Thunder before a knee injury ruled him out.
Head coach Cameron White welcomed the signing, calling Ashwin a world-class match-winner whose experience and tactical acumen will be invaluable to the squad.
The Unicorns will kick off their campaign on June 19 against the LA Knight Riders at the Grand Prairie Cricket Stadium in Texas, with the tournament set to conclude on July 18 at the team’s home venue, the Oakland Coliseum. The franchise has also retained key overseas players such as Matt Short, Finn Allen, and Haris Rauf as they aim for a strong title push.
