Mangaluru, Mar 28: A tragic incident occurred on Friday evening at Salath Nagar in Kuthar Padavin, Ullal taluk, where a migrant worker lost his life after a mud-filled iron bucket detached from a crane hook and fell from a height of about 30 feet onto his head while a new well was being dug.

The deceased has been identified as Shivakumar G K (30), a native of Mallapur in Sorab taluk of Shivamogga district.

The mishap took place around 4.30 pm on Friday at an empty site in Salath Nagar, Kuthar, where a new well excavation was underway. Among six labourers working at the site, three, including Shivakumar, were inside the 30-foot-deep well carrying out work. During the process of lifting mud using an iron bucket attached to a crane, the bucket got detached from the hook and fell directly onto Shivakumar’s head.

Severely injured, Shivakumar was pulled out and rushed to a private hospital in Deralakatte, but he succumbed to his injuries on the way. The two other workers inside the well escaped with minor injuries.

The body has been sent for post-mortem examination. A case has been registered at Ullal police station.

Shivakumar is survived by his wife, a three-year-old son, and a one-year-old daughter. The family was residing in a rented house in Thokkottu. It is learnt that he had sent his wife and children to his native place on Thursday. Notably, Shivakumar had celebrated his younger daughter’s first birthday just two weeks ago.

You are correct. Hard hats (not helmet) must be strictly required to all the heavy construction workers. Safety shouldn't be neglected. Take action, pay the deceased's family.

Using lifting hook with out safety lock . No one cares about safety. Every one thinks nothing will happen , Authority should take strict action against the contractor .
