Sangli, Mar 27: In a shocking incident, a 10-year-old girl died after her father allegedly subjected her to brutal torture on suspicion of theft in Maharashtra’s Sangli district, police said on Friday.

The accused, identified as Dadu alias Nana Yamgar, has been apprehended. Police said he also inflicted similar torture on his elder daughter, aged 11, who is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital.

According to officials, the incident occurred in Atpadi taluka, where Yamgar allegedly hung both daughters — Rutuja and Anuja — upside down by tying their hands and legs to an iron angle fixed to a wall beneath the ceiling. He suspected them of stealing money from a relative’s house in Banpuri village.

Despite attempts by family members, including his father, to rescue the girls, Yamgar reportedly threatened them with a sickle. The two minors were left hanging in the torturous position throughout the night. Police said even Rutuja’s pleas for water were ignored.

By morning, both girls had lost consciousness, following which they were brought down and rushed to a government hospital. However, Rutuja’s condition deteriorated, and she died while being shifted to a hospital in Pandharpur.

Her sister Anuja continues to receive treatment, police said.

The matter came to light after doctors alerted the police in Atpadi about the death. The accused was subsequently taken into custody.

Police suspect that Yamgar may be mentally unstable. A case has been registered against him under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and further investigation is underway.
