Panaji, Mar 27: The Central Government has slashed the Special Additional Excise Duty on petrol and diesel, aiming to ease the burden on consumers amid rising global energy concerns linked to tensions involving the US, Israel, and Iran.

As per the revised structure, excise duty on petrol has been reduced from Rs 13 per litre to Rs 3 per litre, while the duty on diesel has been cut from Rs 10 per litre to nil. The changes came into effect from March 26, 2026.

At the same time, the Centre has introduced a new Special Additional Excise Duty on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF), with the effective duty pegged at Rs 29.5 per litre after exemptions.

Welcoming the move, Pramod Sawant said the reduction will provide relief to citizens, help stabilise fuel prices, and support oil marketing companies facing pressure due to rising global crude prices.

He noted that the decision comes at a crucial time when international developments are impacting fuel markets and expressed confidence that the revised duty structure will benefit both consumers and the energy sector.
