Tehran, Mar 27: Israel launched a fresh wave of strikes “in the heart of Tehran” early Friday, as tensions in West Asia escalated further despite diplomatic efforts to end the ongoing conflict.
Smoke was also seen rising over Beirut, indicating intensified military activity, even as US President Donald Trump extended his deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz until April 6.

Trump said negotiations to end the war were “going very well”, though Tehran has publicly denied engaging in talks with the White House.
The uncertainty surrounding the conflict impacted global markets, with US stocks falling sharply and oil prices rising amid concerns over prolonged disruption in energy supplies. Iran’s continued control over the Strait of Hormuz—through which a significant share of global oil passes—has further strained supplies, pushing up fuel and fertilizer costs worldwide.
The Israel Defense Forces have intensified operations beyond Iran, with ground incursions reported in southern Lebanon. Clashes with Hezbollah have continued for weeks, with thousands of Israeli troops deployed across the border.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is currently in France to engage with G7 diplomats, amid growing skepticism among US allies over the conflict. Trump has also criticised NATO for its reluctance to participate.
The war has taken a heavy toll, with over 1,900 deaths reported in Iran and nearly 1,100 in Lebanon. Israel has reported 18 civilian deaths, along with the loss of three soldiers in Lebanon. At least 13 US military personnel have also been killed, along with several civilians in the Gulf region.
As the conflict enters a prolonged phase, concerns remain high over further escalation and its global economic and humanitarian impact.
