Karnataka govt relaxes 6-year age limit for class 1 admissions

Daijiworld Media Network – Bengaluru

Bengaluru, Mar 26: The state government has announced a relaxation in the minimum age limit of 6 years for class 1 admissions in Karnataka, applicable for the academic year 2026–27.

Making the announcement during the Assembly session on Thursday, primary education minister Madhu Bangarappa stated that the existing 6-year age limit for class 1 admission will be relaxed by two months, allowing children aged 5 years and 10 months to be eligible.

The minister also said that efforts are underway to introduce a new law in the coming days to provide a permanent solution for LKG and UKG admissions. “The department will bring in legislation,” he added.

He noted that parents have been running from place to place and are in a state of confusion. Taking the matter seriously, the government has decided to grant this relaxation, he said.

Under Chapter 3, Section 20 of the Karnataka Education Act, 1993, a 60-day exemption is being provided for class 1 admissions. The minister further stated that necessary changes will also be made to the admission software.

A much-needed and empathetic decision by the State Government and Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa. Many children born in June and July were facing a 'technical' loss of an entire academic year despite being developmentally ready. This 2-month relaxation under the Karnataka Education Act brings huge relief to thousands of parents who were in a state of constant confusion. Thank you for listening to the concerns of the citizens!
