Taiyuan, Mar 25: A norovirus outbreak at Yucai Primary School in Xiaodian District, Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, has caused mass vomiting and diarrhea among students on Wednesday morning, local education authorities reported. Initial tests confirmed the viral infection, prompting class suspensions and online lessons to ensure continued education for unaffected students.
An official from the district education bureau stated that more than 100 students have taken leave, with efforts ongoing to determine the full extent of cases. Health authorities have initiated disinfection protocols and launched epidemiological investigations to trace the source of the outbreak, according to Xinhua News Agency.

Norovirus, often called the “stomach flu” or “stomach bug,” is a leading cause of acute gastroenteritis worldwide. Symptoms include sudden diarrhea and vomiting, which can lead to dehydration, especially in young children, older adults, and those with underlying health conditions. The illness usually resolves within 1 to 3 days, though infected individuals can still spread the virus during recovery.
Globally, norovirus accounts for an estimated 685 million cases annually, including 200 million among children under five. It contributes to approximately 200,000 deaths per year, 50,000 of which are children, primarily in low-income countries, and incurs an estimated $60 billion in healthcare and economic losses.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and urge parents and caregivers to watch for symptoms and ensure proper hydration for affected children.
