Iran warns US troop move could trigger deadly escalation

Tehran, Mar 25: Reports of the United States preparing to deploy thousands of troops to the Middle East have sparked sharp reactions, with Iranian scholar Foad Izadi warning that such a move could escalate the conflict and lead to heavy casualties.

Speaking to NDTV, Izadi claimed Iranian military commanders would view the presence of US ground troops as an advantage. “It is easier to target soldiers on the ground than advanced fighter jets,” he said, cautioning that direct engagement could prove costly for American forces.

His remarks follow reports by Reuters that the Pentagon is considering deploying troops from the elite 82nd Airborne Division based in Fort Bragg to the region, amid rising tensions despite public signals of diplomatic outreach.

Speculation over mediation efforts has also intensified, with Pakistan offering to facilitate dialogue. This came shortly after US President Donald Trump claimed “productive” talks with Iran, a statement dismissed by Tehran as “fake news”.

Izadi expressed scepticism over Washington’s intentions, stating that previous negotiations were followed by military actions. He outlined key conditions for any resolution, including a halt to strikes on civilians and infrastructure, guarantees against future attacks, and compensation for damages allegedly caused by the US and Israel.

He also suggested that Iran could impose transit fees on vessels passing through the strategically crucial Strait of Hormuz to offset losses.

Highlighting Iran’s military capabilities, Izadi said the country relies on domestically developed systems, built through decades of investment since the 1979 revolution. He further criticised Trump’s leadership, alleging inconsistency and external influence in decision-making.

According to official figures, Iran’s death toll has crossed 1,500, while 16 people have been killed in Israel. At least 13 US military personnel and several civilians in the region have also lost their lives.

Despite heightened tensions, Trump has indicated he may delay potential strikes on Iran’s power infrastructure as talks continue, though he has not ruled out the possibility of deploying ground forces. Israel, meanwhile, has signalled that its troops could also be involved if the conflict escalates further.
