Mangaluru, March 17: In a dramatic escalation of a high-value land dispute, Mangaluru North police have arrested a 26-year-old man for allegedly attempting to run down a businessman using a car, in what investigators describe as a calculated act triggered by financial tensions.

The case has been registered at Mangaluru North police station under Crime No. 33/2026, invoking Sections 109, 281, 352, 351, and 304(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023.

The accused has been identified as Mohammed Shareef (26), son of Iqbal, a resident of Falnir in Mangaluru.

Police said the complainant, Mohan Das Shetty (56), son of Late Shivappa Shetty and a resident of Mallikatte, had ongoing land dealings with Shareef and his father, Mohammed Iqbal.

The accused had reportedly invested close to Rs 2 crore in properties located in Surathkal and Vamanjoor areas and had allegedly grown suspicious that he had been cheated.

“Fuelled by anger over the suspected fraud, the accused confronted the complainant earlier in the day,” police sources said.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, March 17, at around 11 am along Arya Samaja Road in Mangaluru city, where both parties had met for discussions.

During the interaction, the accused allegedly snatched the complainant’s mobile phone, further intensifying the situation.

Shortly afterwards, as Shetty left the spot on his two-wheeler, Shareef is said to have chased him in his Toyota Innova Crysta. “In a fit of rage, he drove at high speed and rammed the two-wheeler from behind, in an apparent attempt to kill,” police said.

Acting on the complaint, police registered a case and initiated a probe. The accused was quickly traced and arrested.

“He has been taken into custody and will be produced before the court,” officials confirmed.
