Panaji, Mar 17: The Goa government plans to install AI-powered cameras at 92 locations across the state to strengthen traffic enforcement and improve road safety.
Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho, replying to a question by MLA Aleixo Lourenco in the Goa Legislative Assembly, said the project will include automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras that can detect violations by scanning vehicle numbers and matching them with enforcement databases. The initiative is being implemented by the Public Works Department under the Goa State Road Safety Authority through a public-private partnership model.

The system will enable automated detection and processing of traffic violations under Section 136A of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, reducing dependence on manual policing while enhancing enforcement efficiency.
The government said the project aims to optimise traffic flow through adaptive signal control, predictive analytics, and AI-based vehicle classification. These features are expected to improve traffic movement in urban areas and help authorities better understand traffic patterns and manage congestion.
Officials added that data generated by the system will also be used for evidence-based urban planning and environmental impact assessment. The first phase of the project will see AI-based traffic signals with integrated cameras installed at 92 locations across Goa.
