Mangaluru, March 16: A case has been registered at the Barke Police Station after three undertrial prisoners allegedly attempted to assault the jail superintendent and staff and obstruct them from carrying out their duties at the Mangaluru District Prison.
The accused have been identified as undertrial inmates Iqbal, Shehraj alias Shahrukh, and Afreed.
According to a complaint filed by jail superintendent Sharanappa Dooru, the incident occurred on the night of March 13 when undertrial prisoner Iqbal allegedly came to the office and began shouting loudly, insisting that newly admitted prisoners be accommodated in his cell.

He allegedly abused the staff and issued threats. Despite attempts by the superintendent to pacify him, Iqbal continued the disturbance and attempted to assault him.
During the commotion, another undertrial prisoner, Afreed, also allegedly abused the superintendent and tried to attack him using a plastic chair.
The accused are further alleged to have damaged the water purification machine and pipes installed inside the prison premises, causing losses estimated at around Rs 12,000.
In a related act, inmate Shehraj allegedly damaged items inside his cell. He reportedly broke a carrom board and handed over the wooden pieces to Iqbal and Afreed, allegedly provoking them to attack the jail staff and obstruct them in the discharge of their duties, the complaint stated.
Police have registered a case and further investigation into the incident is under way.
