Yenepoya Medical College Hospital successfully manages rare case of extreme fetal macrosomia

Media Release

Mangaluru, Mar 12:
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Yenepoya Medical College has successfully managed a remarkable obstetric case, highlighting clinical expertise and multidisciplinary teamwork.

A 25-year-old woman at 38 weeks and three days of gestation, with a history of a previous Lower Segment Caesarean Section (LSCS), was admitted under OBG Unit III. Considering the obstetric history, the patient underwent an elective LSCS on February 27, 2026.

The procedure resulted in the safe delivery of a healthy female neonate weighing 5.1 kg. This instance of extreme fetal macrosomia is considered a rare occurrence, particularly in a non-diabetic antenatal mother.

The surgery was successfully conducted by a team comprising Dr Sadiq Unnisa A (unit chief), Dr Reshma Ann Mathew, Dr Akhila L P, and Dr Denia Mary Eldho, with support from postgraduate residents Dr Jasina and Dr Vishnupriya. The anesthesia team, including Dr Alif Shah P and Dr Aejaz Ahamed Z, along with the pediatrics team, played a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of both the mother and the newborn.

The successful management of this challenging obstetric event underscores the clinical expertise and coordinated multidisciplinary care at Yenepoya Medical College. The achievement reflects the department’s commitment to providing advanced maternal and neonatal care while managing high-risk and uncommon clinical scenarios.
