Panaji, Mar 9: Residents of Goa’s capital felt the early intensity of summer on Monday, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported a significant gap between actual temperatures and the “feels like” heat.
IMD data showed that at 11:30 am, the actual temperature was 31°C, while the heat index made it feel like 37°C. By 2:30 pm, the mercury touched 32.4°C, but the perceived temperature rose sharply to 41.2°C. By 5:30 pm, Panaji recorded 33.1°C with relative humidity at 74%, amplifying the discomfort.
Meteorologist M R Ramesh Kumar explained that high humidity contributes to the heightened “feels like” temperature. “The relative humidity increases the discomfort index, making the effective temperature feel much hotter than the actual temperature,” he said.

The IMD has forecast dry and sunny conditions across Goa until March 15, with maximum temperatures expected around 33°C and minimums near 24°C over the next 24 hours.
Authorities have urged the public to take precautions against heat-related illnesses. Recommendations include wearing light, loose cotton clothing, covering the head with wet cloths, hats, or umbrellas during peak hours (11 am–3 pm), staying hydrated with water or ORS, and consuming homemade drinks to prevent dehydration.
The advisory highlights the increased risk of heat cramps and heat rashes during the hottest parts of the day, urging residents to minimize prolonged exposure to the sun.
