Mumbai, Mar 7: Police in Mumbai have arrested a Bihar-based real estate agent in connection with the recovery of five live bullets from a BTech student’s bag inside a hostel room at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay last month.

According to the Powai Police, the accused, Prashant Raj (24), was arrested in Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh on February 26. His arrest followed information provided by Sarvottam Chaudhary (23), a college dropout from Bihar who had been arrested earlier in the case.

Chaudhary was taken into custody on February 19 for allegedly placing the live ammunition in a friend’s bag during a visit to the IIT-Bombay campus as a guest on February 12. During questioning, he reportedly told police that he had bought the bullets from Prashant Raj for Rs 3,500. He also claimed that he had attempted—but failed—to purchase a firearm.

The bullets came to light on February 19 when IIT-Bombay security staff conducted a search of rooms in Hostel No. 1 after a fight reportedly broke out between two students who were allegedly intoxicated. During the inspection, security personnel discovered the live ammunition inside a BTech student’s bag.

Police said Chaudhary was apprehended the same day when he returned to the campus. Investigators later tracked down Raj and arrested him from Ujjain as part of the ongoing probe into the source of the ammunition.
