Mangaluru, Mar 4: St Agnes College (Autonomous), Mangaluru celebrated National Science Day on Saturday, February 28 with great enthusiasm to promote scientific temper, innovation, and awareness about the role of science in everyday life.
The programme was inaugurated by the vice-principal Sr Dr Roopa Rodrigues AC, who highlighted the significance of National Science Day and explained the reason for its celebration.







Chief guest of the day, Dr B K Prashanth, MD, PhD (ayurveda), principal, Prasanna College of Ayurveda and Hospital, Belthangady delivered an enlightening lecture on the theme “Underlying Scientific Basis of Indian Traditions and Practices”. He explained the scientific principles behind various Indian traditions such as greeting with Namaste, drawing rangoli, wearing traditional attire suited to climatic conditions, the ecological importance of sacred groves, and the health benefits of intermittent fasting. He emphasized how traditional knowledge systems like Ayurveda are based on observation, logic, and experimentation, and how they can be understood through modern scientific perspectives.
As part of the celebration, a week-long series of competitions was organised by the science departments to encourage creativity and scientific thinking among students. The events included clay modelling (zoology), unlock the mystery – problem solving (mathematics), video making (physics), reel making (computer science and computer animation), millets and sustainable plate model (nutrition and health education), bio-sustain poster making (microbiology), treasure hunt (chemistry), data quest (statistics), and wealth out of waste (botany).
Students from different departments actively participated and showcased their creativity and innovative ideas. The celebration concluded with a valedictory session, where winners of all competitions were awarded certificates and prizes. Second year BSc students secured the overall championship.
The programme was graced by dean of sciences Vidya Patali; heads of science departments, faculty members and students, making the event a meaningful and successful celebration of science.
