BJP says Mirabag bandhara won’t be forced on villagers

Panaji, Mar 1: A day after residents of Mirabag gheraoed a Water Resources Department (WRD) assistant engineer in protest against the proposed bandhara in the village, Goa BJP president Damodar Naik said the government would not impose any project if the people were opposed to it.

“The CM is aware of the agitation by Mirabag locals. He has been advised to look into the matter and take an appropriate decision,” Naik said.

Making the party’s stand clear, Naik asserted that the BJP would never push forward any initiative against the wishes of the people. He said development projects are undertaken for public benefit, but if residents themselves raise objections, such initiatives lose their relevance.

“Our effort is to bring about improvements, but if the people are opposed to it, then it should not be taken forward,” he added.

The proposed bandhara has triggered strong resistance from villagers, who fear it could lead to flooding, resulting in loss of homes and livelihoods. The agitation intensified when locals surrounded the WRD assistant engineer, demanding that the government scrap the project.
