Washim, Feb 22: A tragic incident was reported from Pangri Navghare village in Malegaon taluka of Washim district in Maharashtra, where a farmer allegedly died by suicide in his own field due to financial distress.

The deceased has been identified as Raju Kalapad, a marginal farmer owning just one acre of agricultural land. According to villagers, his daughter’s wedding was scheduled to be held on March 14, and preparations, including purchase of wedding essentials, were to begin on Saturday. However, he was reportedly under severe financial strain as he was unable to arrange the required funds.

Villagers said that poor agricultural returns over the past few years had pushed him into mounting debt. In search of livelihood, Kalapad and his wife had earlier migrated to Pune for daily wage labour. He had recently returned to the village to make arrangements for his daughter’s wedding.

On Saturday morning, he went to his field and allegedly hanged himself from a tree using a rope.

Kalapad is survived by his wife, one daughter and two young sons. With just a month remaining for his daughter’s wedding, his death has left the family devastated and the village in deep shock.
