Mangaluru, Feb 15: The Mangaluru Customs Commissionerate under the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) celebrated International Customs Day 2026 with enthusiasm at the Business Development Centre, NMPA, Panambur, on Sunday.

Dr M Mohan Alva, chairman of Alva’s Education Foundation, graced the occasion as chief guest, while P Vinitha Sekhar, IRS, commissioner of customs, Mangaluru, presided over the programme.

The event commenced with a prayer by schoolchildren, followed by the lighting of the ceremonial lamp. Biju Thomas, IRS, additional commissioner, delivered the welcome address.

In her speech, Commissioner Vinitha Sekhar highlighted the significance of International Customs Day, which commemorates the inaugural session of the World Customs Organization held in 1953. She noted that the WCO represents 187 Customs administrations handling nearly 98% of global trade and plays a key role in modernising border procedures, as well as supporting developing nations through training and capacity building.

Referring to the 2026 theme, “Customs Protecting Society through Vigilance and Commitment”, she emphasised the need for innovation and digital transformation to tackle challenges such as the growth of e-commerce, smuggling, and cross-border crime. She added that while International Customs Day is globally observed on 26 January, it is celebrated in India on 15 February to align with Republic Day festivities.

Chief guest Dr Mohan Alva lauded the dedication of customs officers, stating, “Though their work often remains unseen, it is firm, vigilant and vital for the nation’s safety and economic strength.” He expressed his happiness in being part of the celebration and appreciated the professionalism, integrity, and silent strength with which Customs personnel discharge their responsibilities in protecting society and facilitating trade.

Appreciation certificates were presented to officers, and Sanman’ awards were conferred on stakeholders for their outstanding contributions.

Harikrishnan D, IRS, joint commissioner, proposed the vote of thanks. The event concluded with the national anthem and a cultural programme.

The cultural segment added vibrancy to the celebration with ‘Yakshagana Natya Vaibhava’ and a thematic song-and-dance presentation titled ‘Rebellion of Amara Sulya’, directed by Mime Ramdas.
