Veteran Kannada film director Joe Simon dies of cardiac arrest at 80

Bengaluru, Feb 13: Veteran Kannada film director, actor, and lyricist Joe Simon passed away on Friday, February 13, at the age of 80, after suffering a sudden heart attack while attending an executive meeting at the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce in Bengaluru. He was immediately rushed to Mallige Hospital, but despite medical attention, he could not be revived.

Born in 1946 in Mandya, Joe Simon entered the Kannada film industry in 1967. He married in 1976 and is survived by four sons. Known for his calm and dedicated life, his sudden demise has sent shockwaves across the Sandalwood fraternity.

A legendary career

Joe Simon began his directorial career in 1977 with ‘Ondu Premada Kathe’ and went on to direct over 100 films, spanning action, romance, and drama. Some of his notable works include ‘Sahasasimha’, ‘Singha Jodi’, ‘Hongkongnalli Agent Amar’, ‘Snehada Kadalalli’, ‘Ravivarma’, ‘Oorige Upakaari’, ‘Time Bomb’, and his final film, ‘Payana’ (2019).

He was a mentor and close friend to iconic actors Vishnuvardhan and Ambareesh, and is credited with giving Vishnuvardhan the title ‘Sahasasimha’. Beyond directing, Joe Simon contributed to Kannada cinema as an actor, dialogue writer, and lyricist.

He was also actively involved in film organisations, including serving as vice-president of the Kannada Film Directors’ Association (KANFIDA).

Heart attack at Film Chamber meeting

Joe Simon reportedly experienced severe chest pain while attending a meeting at the Film Chamber. Pumped into action, staff immediately contacted authorities and rushed him to Mallige Hospital, but he succumbed to the heart attack before treatment could take effect.

Throughout his decades-long career, Joe Simon earned a reputation for delivering box-office hits and nurturing close professional bonds with his colleagues. His work spanned several decades and left an indelible mark on Kannada cinema.

A final viewing will be held on February 14 at Ravindra Kalakshetra, Bengaluru, from 10 am to 1 pm, followed by the last rites the same day.
