Sullia, Feb 12: A purified drinking water unit tank operating under the Department of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj burst at Bellare in Sullia taluk on Tuesday night, causing damage to the facility and raising concerns among residents.
The unit, constructed nearly a decade ago, has been serving the public and was widely used by local residents for safe drinking water. According to sources, the incident occurred late Tuesday night when the large plastic storage tank of the unit suddenly burst open.

It is also suspected that the gas cylinder connected to the unit exploded, while the glass panels of the facility were shattered in the impact. However, the exact cause of the incident remains unclear.
Locals suspect that excessive pressure inside the tank may have led to the rupture. Others believe a possible technical fault could have triggered the mishap. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported.
Bellare Gram Panchayat vice-president Veena Moodayithota, members Anil Rai Chavadibagilu and Manikantha Kalloni, along with others, visited the spot and inspected the damage.
Residents have urged the concerned authorities to conduct a detailed inquiry into the incident and take immediate steps to repair the unit at the earliest to restore drinking water supply to the public.
