Puttur: Porcupine strays into town at night, safely rescued by forest officials

Puttur, Feb 11: A porcupine that entered the heart of Puttur town at night created curiosity among residents after it was seen moving around the area instead of returning to the nearby hills.

The animal is said to have come down from the hillocks surrounding the town and entered Puttur on Monday night. It was spotted near the Rotary G L Building, where it remained for some time.

As people began gathering at the location, the porcupine moved towards the bushes behind the residence of advocate Purandara Bhat, president of Puttur Karnataka Sangha.

Based on information provided by local residents, forest department officials arrived at the scene and safely rescued the porcupine.

    Porcupine is also noted on the streets of UDUPI, especially near Kalpana talkies area during early morning. Porcupine is moving around in various areas in and around Udupi

    As ground nut harvest season is nearby, these porcupines are entering ground nut feilds . Its a common problem farmers facing. Porcupines often move into groundnut fields just before harvest because the crop is highly attractive to them.

    Probably it is feeling harassed in forest and o probably not finding right place to bring small ones?I found there is a igel coming every year to our house steps during winter and stay there underneath..since it is very cold.As the days are beginning warmer it goes away.It collects some old papers or plastic to sleep.

    This is the direct result of human expansion and encroaching into animal habitats. it’s govt responsibility to control this menace and check both humans and animals live safely preserving both species.

    This and many other species of wild animal commonly found in DK have almost become extinct due to poaching and extensive deforestation throughout the Western Ghats; next generation will only be able to see them in books; what an irony!!
