New Delhi, Feb 9: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has declined multiple proposals submitted by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) amid a continuing impasse over Pakistan’s refusal to face India in their scheduled T20 World Cup 2026 match on February 15 in Colombo, according to media reports.
During discussions between the two sides, the PCB reportedly attempted to revisit its boycott decision by placing several demands before the global governing body. However, the ICC rejected three major requests, reiterating the limits of its authority.
One of Pakistan’s key demands was for a bilateral series against India, which the ICC turned down, clarifying that bilateral tours fall outside its jurisdiction — even when they occur within the World Test Championship framework.
The PCB also suggested organising a tri-nation series involving India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, but this proposal was similarly dismissed. In the meeting, Pakistan aligned itself with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), whose representatives were also present.
Another demand from the PCB was that India be directed to tour Bangladesh later this year for a bilateral series that was postponed in 2025. The ICC again maintained that it cannot compel member boards to participate in bilateral engagements.
However, the ICC did consider Pakistan’s request for compensation to Bangladesh after the Women’s T20 World Cup was relocated from Bangladesh to Dubai last year. Reports suggest that Bangladesh may be awarded hosting rights for a future ICC event, possibly the next Under-19 World Cup.
Pakistan also sought assurances that Bangladesh would continue to receive its full share of ICC revenue. The ICC has already confirmed that Bangladesh will not face any independent financial penalties.
The ICC has now given the PCB a 24-hour window to communicate its final position. The matter is expected to be discussed at the highest political level, with PCB chairman likely to meet Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday evening. A final decision is anticipated shortly.
On the field, both teams have begun their World Cup campaigns on a positive note. Pakistan secured a narrow win against the Netherlands, while India opened with a 29-run victory over the United States.
