Caste used for politics, not occupation anymore: Mohan Bhagwat

Daijiworld Media Network - Nagpur

Nagpur, Feb 9: Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Sunday said caste today largely survives for selfish interests and political purposes, as its traditional occupational foundation has long disappeared.

Responding to questions during an interactive session held to mark the RSS centenary, Bhagwat stressed the need for sensitivity and a balanced approach while addressing caste-based conflicts in society. He observed that caste identities remain deeply ingrained, making them a convenient tool in electoral politics.

“Politicians seek votes in the name of caste because caste identities continue to exist strongly in society. Electoral considerations, rather than ideology, often drive political decisions,” he said.

Bhagwat reiterated that caste no longer serves its original social or occupational purpose and is instead being used to advance narrow interests. Emphasising social harmony, he called for understanding and sensitivity in dealing with caste-related issues to prevent further divisions.
