Udupi, Feb 4: In observance of World Cancer Day 2026, marked annually on February 4, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, in association with Manipal Auto Club, Udupi Jawa–Yezdi Motorcycle Club, Royal Enfield Riders Udupi, and Abarana Motors, Udupi, organised a bike rally under the theme “Together We Ride for Life against Cancer”.
The initiative aimed to raise public awareness about cancer prevention, early detection, and the importance of collective action in combating the disease.
Cancer remains one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide. Risk factors such as tobacco use, prolonged alcohol consumption, unhealthy dietary habits, lack of physical activity, and exposure to air pollution significantly contribute to the rising cancer burden.

In many regions, poor prognosis is further compounded by lack of awareness, delayed diagnosis, and limited access to affordable treatment. World Cancer Day, observed every year on 4 February, highlights the importance of cancer prevention, early diagnosis, and timely treatment.
The rally witnessed enthusiastic participation from over 100 bike riders, symbolising unity, strength, and commitment towards a cancer-free future. The riders covered key routes from Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, to Kinnimulky Swagatha Gopura and back, spreading the message that awareness and early medical intervention can save lives.
The event was flagged off by Hariram Shankar, IPS, superintendent of police, Udupi district, who was the chief guest, and Dilip Jose, managing director & chief executive officer, Manipal Health Enterprises Private Limited (MHEPL), the guest of honour. Also present were Dr Sudhakar Kantipudi, chief operating officer, Manipal cluster; Dr Avinash Shetty, medical superintendent, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal; and the heads of departments of the Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Care Centre (MCCCC).
Addressing the gathering, Dr Sudhakar Kantipudi highlighted the growing burden of cancer and stressed the importance of awareness, regular screening, and lifestyle modification. He noted that initiatives such as the bike rally help take vital health messages beyond hospital premises and into the wider community.
The chief guest, Hariram Shankar, IPS, appreciated the initiative and the active participation of bike riders and healthcare professionals. He emphasised the importance of discipline, safe riding practices, and community cooperation in the success of public health initiatives, and commended Kasturba Hospital for its continued engagement in social awareness programmes.
Dilip Jose, guest of honour, reiterated Manipal Health Enterprises’ commitment to comprehensive cancer care, prevention, and community outreach, and encouraged collaborative efforts among healthcare institutions, civic authorities, and the public to reduce the cancer burden through education and early intervention.
Dr Ananth Pai, head of the Department of Medical Oncology, provided an overview of World Cancer Day, highlighting the significance of awareness, early detection, and advances in cancer treatment.
