Dubai unveils driverless pod network to redefine urban travel

Dubai, Feb 3: Traffic jams in Dubai could soon fade into memory as the emirate takes a bold leap toward autonomous mobility. At the World Governments Summit 2026, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) officially introduced Glydways, an innovative driverless transit system built to operate above or alongside existing roads, bypassing conventional congestion altogether.

The system features compact, self-driving electric pods that move along dedicated, narrow guideways, ensuring uninterrupted journeys free from traffic signals and bottlenecks. Mark Seeger, CEO of Glydways, announced that the first phase of operations is expected to begin within the next four months, marking a significant step toward Dubai’s target of making 25 per cent of all journeys autonomous by 2030.

Each pod is designed to carry between four and six passengers and functions entirely without a human driver. Using a combination of advanced sensors, cameras, and automated control systems, the vehicles navigate safely and efficiently. Unlike traditional public transport, Glydways operates on an on-demand model, allowing passengers to board when needed rather than adhere to fixed timetables.

Capable of reaching speeds of up to 50 kmph, the electric pods can cover substantial distances on a single charge. This makes them ideal for connecting metro stations with residential neighbourhoods, business districts, and tourist destinations. With zero direct emissions, the system also aligns closely with Dubai’s sustainability and smart-city ambitions.

A key objective of Glydways is to solve the long-standing “last-mile” problem—the often inconvenient stretch between public transport hubs and final destinations. By closing this gap, the driverless pods aim to make public transport more seamless, time-efficient, and appealing for both residents and visitors.

The RTA has already identified four initial corridors for deployment, focusing on high-traffic commercial and leisure zones. These include a direct link between the National Paints Metro Station and Bluewaters Island, a connection from the Mall of the Emirates Metro Station to Madinat Jumeirah in Umm Suqeim, a new corridor from the OnPassive Metro Station to Alserkal Avenue and Times Square Centre in Al Quoz, and an internal network within Dubai Festival City, with future integration planned for the upcoming Metro Blue Line.

Beyond efficiency, inclusivity has been built into the system’s design. The pods are engineered to comfortably accommodate seniors and people of determination, ensuring accessibility for all users. According to RTA director-general Mattar Al Tayer, the integration of advanced mobility solutions such as Glydways and upcoming air taxi services—expected later in 2026—is ultimately about enhancing everyday life, not just adopting cutting-edge technology.

With Glydways leading the way, Dubai continues to position itself at the forefront of smart urban mobility, shaping a future where transport is cleaner, faster, and effortlessly connected—setting a model that cities around the world may soon look to follow.
