Leopard suspected to have entered city bus in Udupi, sparks public concern

Udupi, Jan 30: A leopard is suspected to have entered a city bus that was parked overnight at Garadimajal in Udupi. The incident came to light on Friday morning when bus staff noticed extensive damage inside the vehicle.

The city bus, which operates regular trips within Udupi city limits, had been parked at its usual location after completing its daily services. Upon inspection the next morning, the cushion covering on the bonnet was found torn, the driver’s seat was badly damaged, and large paw marks were visible inside the bus.

Initially, the damage was believed to be the work of miscreants. However, the size of the paw marks and the pattern of destruction led to strong suspicion that a leopard may have entered the bus during the night.

Social activist Ganesh Raj of Saralebettu said that leopard movement has been increasing in and around Udupi in recent months and described the incident as a clear indication of the growing wildlife presence near residential areas.

Forest department officials responded swiftly by installing cages in the surrounding areas. Forest officer Devaraj Panar confirmed that a cage has already been placed at Badanidiyoor to capture the leopard.

Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions until the animal is safely captured. The incident has once again highlighted concerns over human-wildlife conflict in the region.

People/residents need lasting solution to the menace of wild animals encroaching human territories and not the cause or reasons which led to the strange behaviour of wild animals. Both cannot exist side by side.

This is the direct result of cutting down the forests around us. The animals have no food or shelter inside what remains of the forest, so they come to the city. There are people who cut down the trees inside the forests and sell them for their profit. It is the duty of each and every one to inform the authorities if they come across such cases. It is another matter if the authorities take action or not, but at least let us do our duty.
