Mumbai, Jan 25: In a shocking incident, a 33-year-old professor at a private college was stabbed to death following a dispute on a Mumbai local train at Malad railway station on Saturday evening. Police have arrested the accused and registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The deceased has been identified as Alok Kumar Singh, a resident of Kandivali, who was working as a mathematics teacher at Narsee Monjee College of Commerce & Economics in Vile Parle. Singh had joined the institution in March 2024, police said.

According to officials, Singh was travelling in a second-class coach of a Churchgate–Borivali slow local train along with another teacher. An argument reportedly broke out between Singh and the accused while passengers were getting down at Malad station. The dispute, which began inside the train, escalated on the platform.

The incident occurred around 5.30 pm on Platform No. 1 at Malad station. During the altercation, the accused allegedly pulled out a sharp weapon, believed to be a knife, and stabbed Singh in the abdomen before fleeing the spot.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Sunita Salunke-Thackeray said Singh was rushed to Shatabdi Hospital by his colleague and police personnel, where doctors declared him dead due to excessive blood loss.

A Western Railway official said preliminary information suggested the quarrel arose among passengers while deboarding at Malad station. “During the altercation, the accused attacked Alok Singh with a sharp weapon. The Government Railway Police (GRP) is probing the matter,” the official said.

Police said a 27-year-old daily-wage labourer was detained in connection with the case within 12 hours of the incident. The accused allegedly used the crowd at the busy station to escape, but was later identified and arrested with the help of CCTV footage.

Further investigation is underway.
