Tendulkar Conferred SCG Honorary Life Membership

Sydney, Feb 26 (IANS): Cricket Australia, the Government of New South Wales and the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust felicitated India's batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar with an honorary life membership of the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) here Sunday.

Tendulkar also received a frame and book while Cricket Australia (CA) director Mark Taylor presented him with a head and shoulder bust of Sir Donald Bradman.

Tendulkar became the first overseas player to get the membership which was presented by New South Wales Premier Barry O'Farrell and SCG Trust chairman Rodney Cavalier before the toss for the crucial India-Australia ODI.

"Sachin is one of the greatest cricketers ever and it is only appropriate we honour him with life membership of one of the world's greatest cricket grounds," O'Farrel said.

O'Farrel praised Tendulkar for the contributions he has made to the game and lauded the master blaster's impressive record at the SCG.

"The batting legend has said the SCG is his favourite ground outside of India and it is no wonder when you look at his record at this ground."

"Sachin has provided crowds with wonderful memories at the SCG. He averages an amazing 157 in Tests; headed by his magnificent double century in 2004 Test. Always a crowd favourite, Sachin has often received support akin to Australian legends of the game. Many in the crowd today will be willing him towards his much-vaunted 100th hundred. Regardless of how many runs today, I am certain the Sydney crowd will pay appropriate tribute to this legend of the game in which is almost certain to be his last match at the SCG," he added.

The highly-anticipated hundred, however, continued to elude the master blaster as he was run out on 14 during India's chase of 253.
