Gehlot voices concern over Rajasthan school team allegedly held hostage in Manipur

Jaipur, Jan 20: Former Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot on Tuesday expressed serious concern over reports that a Rajasthan team participating in the National School Games in Manipur was allegedly held hostage at gunpoint and robbed.

Terming the incident as “extremely distressing and worrying”, Gehlot said videos purportedly showing the fear and anguish of the children and their family members have surfaced on social media.

In a statement, Gehlot questioned the response of the state authorities, asking, “What action has the Rajasthan government and the sports department taken on this serious issue?” He stressed that any incident involving children is a matter of grave concern and cannot be taken lightly.

The senior Congress leader demanded a thorough investigation into the matter and urged the state government to strengthen security arrangements for sports teams travelling from Rajasthan in the future.

Referring to the prevailing situation in Manipur, Gehlot said the state has been witnessing violence and unrest for nearly two years and is currently under President’s Rule, making the Centre fully responsible for maintaining law and order.

“Despite this, it appears that the central government is not paying adequate attention to the situation,” he alleged, calling for immediate steps to ensure the safety of sportspersons and civilians alike.
