Byndoor, Jan 17: A leopard that had been frequently sighted over the past several days and had caused panic among local residents was caught in a cage set by the forest department on Friday in Heruru gram panchayat limits here.

Following complaints from the public, forest officials had begun an operation to capture the leopard by installing a cage on Thursday at a private plantation at Chiktadi in Heruru village. On Friday morning, a female leopard, estimated to be around three years old, was found trapped in the cage.

Byndoor range forest officer Jyothi Sandesh Kumar, deputy range forest officer K Sadashiva, forest guard Shruti Gowda, and forest watcher Suresh Gowda visited the spot.

The captured leopard was later released into a protected forest area.
