Harmanpreet stars as MI pull off record chase against Gujarat Giants in WPL

Navi Mumbai, Jan 14: Mumbai Indians skipper Harmanpreet Kaur continued her sensational form in the Women’s Premier League Season 4, powering her side to a commanding seven-wicket victory over Gujarat Giants at the DY Patil Stadium on Tuesday night.

Chasing a stiff target of 193, Harmanpreet played a captain’s knock of 71 not out off 43 balls, studded with seven fours and two sixes, as MI sealed the chase with four balls to spare. With 165 runs from three matches at an astonishing average of 165, Harmanpreet has emerged as the leading run-scorer of WPL 2026 so far.

During her fluent innings, the 36-year-old also crossed the 1,000-run mark in WPL history, becoming only the second batter to achieve the milestone after teammate Nat Sciver-Brunt.

The win extended MI’s dominance over Gujarat Giants, marking their eighth victory over the side, and lifted them to second place on the points table with two wins from three matches. Gujarat Giants, meanwhile, suffered their first loss of the season and slipped to third.

Mumbai’s chase began on a shaky note with the early loss of openers Hayley Matthews (22) and wicketkeeper-batter G Kamalini (13), leaving MI at 37 for two in the fifth over. Harmanpreet then steadied the innings alongside Amanjot Kaur, with the pair adding 72 runs for the third wicket in just 44 balls. Amanjot chipped in with a brisk 40 off 26 deliveries before being dismissed.

Harmanpreet then found solid support in Australian all-rounder Nicola Carey, and the duo stitched together an unbeaten 84-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Carey remained not out on 38 off 23 balls as MI completed their highest-ever chase in WPL history and the biggest successful run chase at the DY Patil Stadium.

Earlier, Gujarat Giants posted a competitive 192 for five after being put in to bat. Late fireworks from Georgia Wareham (43 off 33) and Bharti Fulmali (36 not out off 15) powered the Giants in the final overs, with the pair adding 56 runs in just 24 balls for the sixth wicket.

Fulmali, who was ‘retired out’ earlier in the innings in a first for WPL history, made a telling impact on her return, hammering boundaries and sixes at the death. Gujarat plundered 39 runs from the final two overs to push their total close to 200.

For MI, pacer Shabnim Ismail delivered a disciplined spell, conceding just 25 runs in her four overs. Despite Amanjot enduring an expensive outing with the ball, her contribution with the bat proved crucial.

With Harmanpreet leading from the front, Mumbai Indians once again underlined their credentials as strong title contenders in the ongoing WPL season.
