Guwahati, Jan 12: Indian Railways is set to introduce the Vande Bharat Sleeper train between Guwahati and Kolkata later this month, marking a major milestone in long-distance overnight rail travel and significantly boosting connectivity between the Northeast and eastern India.
According to official sources, the upcoming service will be India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper train open exclusively to the general public, with no provision for VIP, emergency quota or railway passes. Senior railway officials will also not be permitted to travel using passes on this train, ensuring uniform rules for all passengers.

Only confirmed tickets will be issued, with no waiting list, while the Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC) facility will also not be allowed. Officials said this move aims to bring transparency in ticketing and enhance passenger comfort by eliminating uncertainty in berth allocation.
Passengers will be provided with a fully upgraded and modern bedroll, including improved-quality blankets and covers, superior to those used in regular long-distance trains. The onboard experience will also feature local cuisine, while all staff members will wear a standard uniform, reflecting the train’s premium identity.
“The Vande Bharat Sleeper will offer improved facilities, uniform rules and a world-class travel experience, while also showcasing India’s culture,” officials said.
The train will have a total of 11 coaches, comprising three AC 3-tier coaches, four AC 2-tier coaches and one AC 1-tier coach. Of the total 823 berths, 611 are in AC 3-tier, 188 in AC 2-tier and 24 in AC 1-tier.
Equipped with advanced features, the Vande Bharat Sleeper includes ergonomically designed berths with enhanced cushioning, automatic doors with vestibules for smooth movement, superior suspension for better ride comfort, reduced noise levels, and the Kavach automatic train protection system. Additional safety and comfort measures include an emergency talk-back system and advanced disinfectant technology to maintain high sanitation standards.
Railway officials said extensive preparations are underway for the launch, which is expected to redefine overnight rail travel while strengthening ties between the Northeast and the rest of the country.
