Vadodara, Jan 12: India began the ODI leg of the multi-format white-ball series against New Zealand on a winning note, registering a four-wicket victory in the first ODI played at the Kotambi Stadium here on January 11.
Batting first, New Zealand posted a competitive total of 300 runs. In reply, the Men in Blue put up a composed chase, led by Virat Kohli, who narrowly missed out on a century with a fine 93. Shubman Gill contributed a crucial 56 at the top, while KL Rahul remained unbeaten on 29 to steer India home.

Following the match, questions were raised over KL Rahul’s batting position at No.6. Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan defended the move, highlighting changing conditions in ODIs.
“When KL Rahul bats, people often ask why he is batting so low. But the rule has now changed because the ball reverses slightly after the 34th over. If the ball doesn’t reverse, it becomes slow. In such situations, a technically correct batter makes the difference,” Pathan said in a video on his YouTube channel.
He added that while other batters appeared slightly troubled during the chase, Rahul remained in control and played smartly by rotating the strike. “He clearly planned to target the 49th over and sealed the game with two fours followed by a six,” Pathan noted.
Pathan also praised Shreyas Iyer’s return to form. Batting at No.4, Iyer scored a vital 49 off 47 balls, playing a key role in stabilising the chase.
“Shreyas Iyer showed why he is a solid No.4. He can stand and hit big shots against spin, and it’s a big positive after returning from injury,” Pathan said.
The former cricketer also backed Shubman Gill, who overcame a cautious start to score his half-century. Pathan pointed out that Gill’s approach was understandable, given his recent run of low scores across formats, including Tests, T20Is and the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
With this win, India take early momentum in the ODI series as both teams look ahead to the remaining matches.
