Mumbai, Jan 5: The Malad Police have arrested a man accused of extorting money from small traders in the city’s western suburbs by threatening them with damaging online complaints.
The accused, identified as Sanjay Yadav, is a resident of the Prem Nagar slum in Goregaon, police officials said. According to investigators, Yadav allegedly targeted small business owners and attempted to intimidate them by posting complaints about their establishments on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

The case came to light after several suburban traders approached the police and gave statements describing how they were allegedly blackmailed. Based on these complaints, an FIR was registered at the Malad police station.
Following the registration of the case, police tracked down Yadav and arrested him under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Appealing to the public, senior inspector Dushyant Chavan of Malad Police said that others who may have faced similar harassment or blackmail by the accused should come forward. “Anyone who has been troubled by the accused is requested to approach Malad Police Station and file a complaint,” he said.
Further investigation into the matter is ongoing.
