Ranchi, Jan 3: Soorma Hockey Club’s miserable start to the Women’s Hockey India League continued as they suffered their third consecutive defeat on Friday night, going down 0-2 to the Royals at the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Astro Turf Stadium.

Yet to score a goal after 12 quarters of hockey, Soorma once again dominated circle entries but failed to convert, despite making 87 circle penetrations across three matches. Their latest setback was largely self-inflicted, with missed chances proving costly.

Soorma had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 25th minute when they were awarded a penalty stroke. However, Penny Squibb’s effort was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Madhuri Kindo. The miss came back to haunt them soon after.

With seconds remaining in the first half, the Royals broke the deadlock when Agostina Alonso fired a powerful pass into the circle from midfield, which Rutuja Dadaso Pisal deftly deflected into the net in the 30th minute.

Defences dominated the opening quarter, with both teams showing discipline and composure. While the Royals enjoyed more possession early on, Soorma were the more proactive side in attack, registering 10 circle entries in the first quarter alone.

In the second half, the Royals looked sharper on the counter. Maria Ortiz came close to doubling the lead in the 34th minute after beating her marker, but her low shot struck the post. The decisive blow came in the 54th minute when Sakshi Rana produced a stunning finish. Receiving a reverse pass from Rutuja, she unleashed a powerful strike from a tight angle into the top right corner, leaving goalkeeper Savita with no chance.

The result handed the Royals their second win in three matches, while Soorma were left searching for answers after another night of missed opportunities and frustration.
