Mangaluru, Jan 2: In view of New Year celebrations, police conducted intensive bandobast and checking operations across various parts of the city on Thursday night, during which 52 persons were found to have consumed narcotic substances. Additionally, three drug peddlers were taken into custody.
As part of sustained efforts to make Mangaluru drug-free, police have been carrying out continuous operations. In this backdrop, special night-long checks were conducted during the New Year celebrations. Across the limits of all police stations, more than 1,000 suspected persons were subjected to checks. Of these, 52 individuals were found to have consumed narcotic substances.

Among those detected were 25 students, including two locals and 23 from outside the district. The remaining 27 were members of the public, comprising 17 labourers and 10 persons engaged in various professions.
In a separate development, a youth was taken into custody on Tuesday in connection with drug peddling, and 50 grams of MDMA were seized from him. On Wednesday, two more accused were found in possession of 200 grams of MDMA. All three accused reportedly have criminal backgrounds.
Police commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy stated that the operation has yielded significant information about the network of drug consumers and sellers, which will help in busting the racket in the coming days. He added that this has marked a success for the ‘drug-free Mangaluru’ campaign.
