Bantwal, Jan 1: A massive fire broke out late Wednesday night at an electronics shop on the Vittal–Kalladka road, reducing the establishment to ashes.
The blaze reportedly erupted suddenly at Sri Electronics, and within minutes spread rapidly, engulfing the entire shop. The fire also caused damage to nearby commercial establishments, including a tailor shop, Amit Hotel and Ganesh Driving School. A short circuit is suspected to have triggered the fire.

As several shops and commercial units are located in the vicinity, there was a serious risk of the fire spreading further. A large number of people gathered at the spot following the incident. Police rushed to the scene on receiving information and took steps to bring the situation under control.
The fire and emergency services were alerted. However, as Vittal does not have its own fire station, fire tenders had to be requisitioned from Puttur or B C Road. Firefighters from Puttur carried out the firefighting operation and succeeded in dousing the flames.
The total loss due to the incident is estimated to be over Rs 2 crore. The fire has come as a major shock to the people of Vittal, who were preparing to welcome the New Year after year-end celebrations.
