Panaji, Dec 29: Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao has strongly condemned the series of attacks on the Christian community reported from various parts of the country during the Christmas season, stating that the situation has deteriorated to such an extent that people are being forced to celebrate the festival under fear.
Reacting to the incidents on Sunday, Alemao said such acts are deeply worrying and condemnable, and pose a serious threat to the secular fabric of the nation. He asserted that vandalising churches, damaging Christmas decorations and intimidating people in the name of religion send a dangerous and divisive message.

“This is an assault on India’s constitutional guarantees of religious freedom. No one should be forced to celebrate festivals under fear. It is the government’s responsibility to protect every citizen, but it has failed in this duty,” Alemao said.
He added that such actions do not contribute to the country’s growth but instead tarnish its image. “By indulging in vandalism and threats, the perpetrators are weakening the nation. The government must introspect and take decisive action,” he said.
Emphasising constitutional values, Alemao said, “We are all citizens of this country with equal rights guaranteed by the Constitution. Those who disrespect the Constitution are the ones attacking others.”
The opposition leader called for immediate steps to ensure the safety of all communities and to uphold the principles of secularism and harmony enshrined in the Constitution.
