Tangiers, Dec 28: Star striker Victor Osimhen was on target as Nigeria became the second team to qualify for the knockout stage of the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, while Senegal edged closer to the last 16 after a hard-fought draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday.
Osimhen opened the scoring just before half-time as the Super Eagles defeated Tunisia 3-2 in Fes. Captain Wilfred Ndidi netted his first international goal, while Ademola Lookman also found the scoresheet as Nigeria raced into a three-goal lead before surviving a late Tunisian fightback. Montassar Talbi and Ali Abdi scored late goals for Tunisia to set up a tense finish, but Nigeria held on for victory.

The win took three-time champions Nigeria to six points in Group C, confirming their place in the last 16 alongside record seven-time winners Egypt. Tunisia remain on three points, while Tanzania and Uganda have one point each going into the final round of matches.
In the same group, Uganda were held to a 1-1 draw by neighbours Tanzania in Rabat. Simon Msuva had given Tanzania the lead from the penalty spot, but Uche Ikpeazu struck late to earn Uganda a point, after Allan Okello missed a late penalty for the Cranes.
Meanwhile, Senegal were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against DR Congo in Tangiers despite dominating possession and chances. Cedric Bakambu gave DR Congo the lead in the 61st minute, but Sadio Mane equalised eight minutes later, scoring his 10th AFCON goal after a fine run by teenage substitute Ibrahim Mbaye.
The result kept Senegal top of Group D on goal difference, with DR Congo level on points. Senegal coach Pape Thiaw admitted his side missed chances to kill the game early but praised his players’ reaction after conceding.
Earlier, Benin registered a historic 1-0 win over Botswana in Rabat, with defender Yohan Roche scoring the only goal. It was Benin’s first AFCON victory after five draws and 10 losses in previous appearances, while Botswana remain bottom of the group without a point or a goal.
