Melbourne, Dec 27: England produced a spirited performance to register their first Test victory on Australian soil in 15 years, defeating the hosts by four wickets inside two dramatic days to clinch the fourth Ashes Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday.
Chasing a modest target of 175, England rode on contributions from Jacob Bethell (40) and Zak Crawley (37) to reach the target despite losing six wickets, sparking wild celebrations among the travelling ‘Barmy Army’ in front of a crowd of 92,045.

Earlier, England dismissed Australia for 132 in their second innings soon after lunch, completing a remarkable bowling effort on a pitch that saw a staggering 36 wickets fall in two days. Australia had resumed at 4 for no loss, but England’s bowlers struck regularly to keep the hosts in check.
Harry Brook (18 not out) and Jamie Smith (3 not out) stayed calm to finish the chase after Australia briefly threatened a late comeback through Mitchell Starc and Jhye Richardson.
“A good feeling after a tough tour so far,” said England captain Ben Stokes, praising his side’s bravery and focus amid criticism and pressure following defeats in the first three Tests.
Australia skipper Steve Smith admitted the match slipped away, saying the pitch offered more assistance to bowlers than expected. The surface, with significant grass cover, drew criticism from former players for being overly bowler-friendly.
The win ends England’s long wait for a Test victory in Australia since 2011 and keeps the Ashes series alive, with the tourists heading to Sydney for the final Test with renewed confidence.
