Margao: MMC chairperson flags illegal festive stalls, traffic woes persist

Panaji, Dec 24: Margao Municipal Council (MMC) chairperson Damodar Shirodkar on Tuesday expressed concern over the unchecked proliferation of illegal roadside stalls in Margao, selling festive items ahead of Christmas.

Shirodkar said the unauthorised vendors have adversely impacted licensed traders and have significantly added to traffic congestion in the town. He also pointed out that some government employees have allegedly set up stalls in front of their residences to sell festive goods.

While the MMC chairperson warned that action would be initiated against illegal operators, no eviction or enforcement drive had been carried out till late evening, drawing criticism from citizens.

A local resident said Margao already experiences severe traffic congestion during peak hours, and the presence of roadside stalls has further worsened the situation. “The powers to act against illegal vendors rest with the municipal council. The fact that no action has been taken so far clearly shows a lack of intent,” the citizen alleged.

Questioning the timing of the warning, the resident added, “Christmas is tomorrow. If the MMC was serious about taking action, it would have done so by now.”

The issue has once again brought into focus concerns over civic enforcement and traffic management in Margao during the festive season.
